asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what financial aid for roads has been given to the Glasgow area over the past 10 years.

Between January 1967 and May 1975, specific grant—including remanet grant thereafter—amounting to £48·3 million was paid to the Corporation of Glasgow in respect of capital expenditure on principal and classified roads in Glasgow. With the reorganisation of local government in May 1975, specific grant ceased to be made available. Government support for local authority roads and other services is now by way of rate support grant, and the allocation of this grant to particular services is a matter for local authorities themselves.
