asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the percentage of undergraduate places on degree courses that are currently unfilled.

In terms of physical capacity in academic departments, it is estimated that altogether some 8 per cent. of places in universities in Great Britain and polytechnics in England and Wales are unfilled. It is not possible to distinguish between undergraduate and postgraduate places. This figure does not take account of availability of staff and other resources which also determine the number of students that may be accepted.
