asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will provide a breakdown of the total of £78 per week which it costs to keep a prisoner in gaol.

Figures are not yet available for a detailed breakdown, but within the £78 it is expected that some £64 will be attributable to staff-related expenditure and the balance to general supplies, operating expenses, welfare and prisoners' earnings.
