asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what are the objectives and composition of the Noise Advisory Council; how many people it employs; and what is the cost to public funds.

The terms of reference of the Noise Advisory Council are:
Under the chairmanship of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State the Council has 26 members including representatives from local government, industry, the trade unions, universities and environmental associations.The Council does not employ staff. Secretariat is provided by the Department of the Environment by staff who are also engaged upon other duties. Council members receive no remuneration. In 1975–76 their travel and subsistence costs were £3,346."To keep under review the progress made generally in preventing and abating the generation of noise; to make recommendations to Ministers with responsibility in the field; and to advise on such matters as they may refer to the Council."
