asked the Secretary of State for Defence what criteria are used for the payment of boarding school fees for the children of Service men of all ranks who are serving outside the United Kingdom.

The object is to provide assistance with boarding school fees for those Service parents at home or overseas who wish their children to have continuity of education. The maximum rates payable represent a percentage of the average of the fees charged at some 280 schools, and do not distinguish between boys' and girls' or senior and junior schools. Schools have to be registered with the Department of Education and Science.
