asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many forms WW 56–3617 12/75 have been published to date; at what cost; what is the purpose of asking for the return of car registration books at Swansea as outlined on these forms; what is the average time taken for this operation; what has to be done; and what action he has taken or proposes taking to expedite this procedure.

10 million have been used at a printing cost of some £13,000; to facilitate the transfer of vehicle records from local taxation offices to the centralised licensing system; nine working days from receipt of the book at Swansea; the vehicle's particulars have to be examined and fed into the computer to set up a vehicle record from which a new registration document is automatically produced and sent to the vehicle keeper; none, because none is, in our view, necessary.
