asked the Secretary of State for Industry what directives he has given the Chairman of the Post Office concerning the need for Post Office general policy to maintain and develop jobs in development areas and not to transfer them out to non-development areas.

None. My right hon. Friend has, however, drawn the Post Office's attention to Government policies in respect of development areas. But for most Post Office employees the nature of the work determines its location.
