asked the Secretary of State for Social Services in view of the increased taxes imposed upon the motorist by the recent Budget, what increases he proposes to make to the mobility allowance to ensure that the disabled motorist is not worse off as a result of the Budget.

The Social Security Pensions Act 1975 provides for an annual review of the rate of mobility allowance, taking into account the national economic situation, the general standard of living and such other matters as my right hon. Friend considers relevant. Transport costs are clearly one factor it would be appropriate to take into account. As I have stated in reply to previous Questions, the allowance is to be increased later this year; and details will be given to the House as soon as possible.
