asked the Secretary of State for Social Services when he expects to be able to publish the findings of the investigation he has set up into the inequalities in health between social classes.

The first meeting of the group set up to consider this important matter was held on Thursday 7th April attended by Professor J. N. Morris, Professor Peter Townsend, Dr. Cyril Smith, and officials of the Department. There is, of course, a considerable mass of statistical information which is relevant, but it requires further analysis, in the hope of identifying possible modes of action. The group intends to secure the services of a suitably qualified scientist to survey existing material, and to carry out any additional survey which may be needed. He will work under the general supervision of the group, whose members will also be reviewing the problem. It is not yet possible to say when the work will be concluded.
