29.
Mr. James Johnson
asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he is satisfied with the measures of safety at sea for seamen and fishermen; and if he will make a statement regarding any proposed future legislation on this matter.
Mr. Clinton Davis
Our measures to protect the safety of seamen and fishermen are already of a high standard but are being further improved. There is before Parliament a Merchant Shipping (Safety Convention) Bill to permit United Kingdom ratification of the 1974 International Convention for the Safety of Life at sea and a larger Merchant Shipping Bill including further safety measures is in course of preparation. New regulations regarding certificates of competency are also due to be made shortly.
