asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many members of Her Majesty's Forces have had to claim rent rebates in consequence of their low take-home pay in each year since the scheme has been in operation.

Eligibility of Service personnel for rent and rate rebate depends on size of family and gross family income, not on the net pay of the Service man. The number of Service men world-wide receiving the rebate in each year since the scheme began is as follows:

October 19731,186
March 19745,803
March 19758,865
March 19768,577
March 19777,944
The scheme began in respect of rent on 1st May 1973 and was extended to include rates in April 1974.
