Tax and national insurance contributions have been expressed as a percentage of gross income, which for the married man includes family allowance. The 1973–74 figures quoted in the earlier answer have been revised.As in the earlier answer, earnings are the average earnings of full-time manual adult male workers aged 21 and over in manufacturing and certain other industries at October of each year. The figure for October 1977 is not yet available.National insurance contributions are the amounts paid in each year by a manual adult male who was not contracted out of the graduated pension scheme in 1973–74.Any difference between the sum of the national insurance and tax percentages and the total is due to roundings in the calculations.
