asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will publish a list of the abbreviations commonly used by his Department in parliamentary speeches, statements and answers to Questions with their respective meanings.

The following abbreviations have been used by me and my ministerial colleagues on occasions, but generally when their meaning has already been made clear:
DUP | Democratic Unionist Party |
GOC | General Officer Commanding |
IRA | Irish Republican Army |
NICS | Northern Ireland Civil Service |
NILP | Northern Ireland Labour Party |
OIRA | Official Irish Republican Army |
OUP | Official Unionist Party |
PIRA | Provisional Irish Republic Army |
RUC | Royal Ulster Constabulary |
SDLP | Social Democratic and Labour Party |
UDA | Ulster Defence Association |
UDR | Ulster Defence Regiment |
UUUC | United Ulster Unionist Council |
UVF | Ulster Volunteer Force |
UWC | Ulster Workers Council. |
