asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is his definition of the principal criteria for public subsidy of uneconomic rail services.

Exchequer subsidy is given to the railway passenger system as a whole, not to individual services.

35.

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what increase in Government subsidy would be necessary to limit British Rail fare increases to 10 per cent.; and what subsidy increase would be required to limit increases for south-eastern commuters to the overall fare increase of 14 per cent.
