Mr. Madden
asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much was spent by his Department directly, or by agencies responsible to him, on animal experimentation during 1976 and 1977; how much money was spent in the same years on research into developing alternatives to living animals in research; and if he will make a statement.

The amount spent on animals used in research directly funded by my Department was some £4,500 in each year. I regret that information is
