asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he is aware that the leaking of oil off Rathlin Island is responsible for the destruction of much wild bird life in the area and a hazard to the islanders and if he will now announce what steps he is going to take to deal with this matter.

I understand that very little oil has leaked from the "Ella Hewitt" in recent months. On investigation we have found that it would be unacceptably expensive to remove the wreck. We are currently pursuing an alternative solution, and I shall write to the hon. Member as soon as possible with our decision, and place copies in the Library of the House for the information of hon. Members.
