asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will report on the progress made in the discussions being held with the motor industry on possible targets for improving fuel consumption in new cars.

The Government would like to achieve greater fuel economy in motor transport in the interests of energy conservation and the motoring public. Following initial discussion with the motor industry last December a working group has been set up under Department of Energy chairmanship, which includes representatives of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and traders and the Petroleum Industry Advisory Committees as well as of other Government Departments. The group has held two meetings to date.
