asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is his estimate of the numbers of jobs currently supported by the temporary employment subsidy in Scotland, in Wales and in Northern Ireland; and what is the estimated cost to public funds.

I regret I am unable to give information in the precise form requested. The cumulative total of jobs supported as at 28th April in Scotland and in Wales since the inception of the scheme and the estimated gross costs are given below. Net costs to public funds are negligible. A separate scheme operates in Northern Ireland and is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.
