asked the Secretary of State for Transport, in view of the fact that serious underestimation of the growth of traffic and the proportion of heavy goods vehicles has caused expensive and unplanned reconstruction and repairs to the M6 and M5 at Birmingham, if he will ensure that future road schemes in the region will take adequate account of both traffic growth and the proportion of heavy goods vehicles.

New national standards for deign take account of the latest predictions on the growth of all classes of traffic including heavy goods vehicles, and future road schemes in the Midlands will be designed in accordance with these. These standards are continually under review.
