asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many hospital maternity units deal with more than 1,500 births a year; and how many of these units have no registrar.

The information about hospital maternity units is not available in the precise form requested but for 1976, the latest year for which figures are available, there were 214 maternity units in England which delivered in excess of 1,000 babies. Information about staffing levels in these units is not collected centrally.
