asked the Secretary of State for Industry what discussions he has had with the National Enterprise Board and British Leyland in South Africa about the code of conduct for British firms in South Africa concerning the proposed merger with the Sigma Motor Corporation to form Sigma-Leyland.

The Government's White Paper incorporating the code of conduct (Cmnd. 7233) has been brought to the attention of the company, which is well aware of its provisions and the reporting requirements. The effect, if any, or the proposed merger on BL's position under the code will depend on the form of the agreement, which has yet to be finalised.
