At 30th September 1977, there were 1,045 consultants in the specialty of mental illness (adult) employed by the NHS in England and Wales. A large proportion of these would have some responsibility for the treatment of elderly patients, but psychogeriatrics as such is not recognised as a separate specialty in the National Health Service.
