asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in the light of the recent amnesties in Chile, if he will now take steps to appoint an ambassador to that country.

My right hon. Friend has no intention of appointing an ambassador and would not consider doing so unless there had been real and tangible evidence of an improvement in the human rights situation in Chile.
