asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what study he has made of the rapid increases in car insurance premiums; and if he will ask the Price Commission to carry out a special investigation into prices and profits involved in car insurance together with the associated prices and profits of garages carrying out car repairs.

Insurance premiums are a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Trade. Under the provisions of the Price Investigation and Examination (Exceptions) Order 1977 I am precluded from directing the Commission to undertake an examination of this sector.I have no current plans to refer car repairs to the Price Commission, but will bear in mind my hon. Friend's suggestion.
