asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if recent pay awards in the National Health Service have been within the Government's 5 per cent. pay guidelines; and what measures he is taking to ensure that the guidelines are observed.

No negotiations on pay in the National Health Service have yet taken place in the 1978–79 pay round. If the hon. Member has in mind the recent settlement of the works supervisors dispute, I refer him to my reply to the hon. Member for Chingford (Mr. Tebbit) on 6th November. Negotiators in the National Health Service are fully aware of the guidance given in the White Paper "Winning the Battle Against Inflation".
