asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his latest estimate of the trend of unemployment in Scotland over the next 12 months; and if he will make a statement.

Economic activity has been rising in the United Kingdom and in Scotland this year and some further increase is in prospect over the next year. In my view, this should enhance employment prospects.

21.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the current level of unemployment in Scotland.

Seasonally adjusted unemployment in Scotland has fallen over the course of this year, and is now some 9,500 lower than in January. The reduction of unemployment is a major objective of our economic and industrial policies.
