The percentage of pupils leaving maintained secondary schools in England in 1977 who were reported as intending to go on to further or higher education is given below for each local education authority with 4,000 or more leavers. The total number of school leavers in each authority listed is also shown, together with the percentage of leavers whose destination was unknown. These figures are all estimates derived from a 10 per cent. sample of school leavers, and corresponding estimates for the authorities with fewer than 4,000 leavers could be subject to unacceptably large sampling errors.
Any valid comparison between one authority and another would need to take account of local differences, for example, in the socio-economic structure of the
