asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will seek to set up an immediate inquiry into the possible dumping of Italian washing machines into the United Kingdom market at prices below those which are equivalent to the prices freely available for the same machines in Italy.

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 23rd November 1978; Vol. 958, c. 734], gave the following information:The concept of dumping between EEC member States does not exist under the Treaty of Rome, and I have no powers to make such an inquiry. However, in the context of the industrial strategy, the Government are in close consultation with the industry on the issues raised by Italian washing machine imports.
