Mr. Newton
asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she foresee any problems in training sufficient dentists to ensure the ready availability of dental treatment in the United Kingdom.
Mr. Oakes
No. The McNair Committee on Recruitment to the Dental Profession recommended in 1956 an expansion of the dental schools in Great Britain to enable the number of dentists on the dentists' register to be increased to at least 20,000. This expansion is now almost complete and on 1st January 1978, there were 20,383 dentists on the register. I am informed that university dental schools are achieving their current student intake targets.
