asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether, in view of the introduction of more stringent safety tests, he will estimate the average cost to pharmaceutical companies of bringing a genuinely new drug on to the market.

Information on the costs of discovering and developing particular medicines is not necessary to the operation of the phamarceutical price regulation scheme and is not available to the Department.
