asked the Secretary of State for Transport what plans he has to reduce the levels of accidents on motorways.
Mr. Horam
Experiments with more informative signals are planned for the M1, and on the M4 a computerised system connected to electronic fog and vehicle detectors is to be installed. Most vehicles manufactured after 1 October 1979 will have to be fitted with at least one rear fog lamp. In addition to regular maintenance, which offers opportunities for improvements, the need for safety fences and better lighting at particular places is kept under review.
