Mr. Austin Mitchell
asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what compensation is available and what financial help in rehousing and removal is currently available to individuals affected by environmental pollution.
Mr. Denis Howell
There are no specific statutory provisions linking compensation or financial help with environmental pollution other than those under part I of the Land Compensation Act 1973—which provides for compensation for pollution arising from the use of new or altered public works. Compensation in the form of damages may in certain circumstances be payable as a result of common law actions.
