asked the Lord Privy Seal how many parties to the law of the sea conference have presented legislation to their Parliaments for the grant of licences covering deep sea mining; and when he contemplates doing so in the United Kingdom.

Interim deep seabed mining legislation is under consideration in the United States Congress. Legislation for this purpose also has been tabled by an all-party group in the West German Parliament. The question of introducing legislation on this subject in the United Kingdom is kept under review.
