asked the Secretary of State for Trade how many marine surveyors are employed in his Department; in which part of the United Kingdom they are situated; and how many are employed at the central office in London for the years 1977 and 1978.

The number of marine surveyors employed in my Department on 1 October 1977, 1978 and 1979 and their location is as follows:the totals have been, broken down into districts, since 1972.

The total of 44 marine superintendents in post on 1 October 1979 includes three district superintendents located in London, Southampton and Hull.

The term "shipping master" is an earlier title, still used on some occasions, for staff now known as marine superintendents.
