asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the expenditure in 1977, 1978 and in the current year, to date, on the construction of prison buildings in England and Wales excluding new projects.

The figures, which include the cost of repairs to and maintenance of prison officers' quarters, are as follows:
