asked the Secretary of State for Trade (1) what was the volume of United Kingdom imports of man-made fibre sheets and pillowcases in 1977, 1978 and in the first nine months of 1979, respectively;(2) what was the volume of United Kingdom imports of man-made fibre tufted carpets in 1977, 1978 and in the first nine months of 1979, respectively.

[pursuant to his reply, 29 November 1979]: Details of imports of tufted carpets, carpeting and rugs of man-made textile materials are published in table IV of the 1977 annual edition, and the December 1978 and September 1979 editions of the "Overseas Trade Statistics" of the United Kingdom, copies of which are in the Library. The relevant code numbers are 5802–1401 under SITC(R) sub-group 657.6 in 1977 and 5802–1400 under SITC(R2) item 659·51 in 1978 and 1979.Trade in sheets and pillow-cases of man-made textiles is not separately identified. Details of imports of sheets, pillow and bolster cases other than of cottton, flax or ramie are also given in table IV. The relevant code numbers are 6202–1706 and 6202–1738 under SITC(R) item 656.91 in 1977 and 6202–1910 and 6202– 1940 under SITC(R2) item 658.42 in 1978 and 1979.

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will make a statement on the decisions made at the meeting of the Council of Ministers held on 20 November regarding the curbing of the upsurge of imports of man-made fibres and products from the United States of America.
