asked the Prime Minister if she will make a statement on the pay of Service university cadets and on London pay for the Armed Forces.

The Armed Forces Pay Review Body in its second supplement to its eighth report has recommended new pay rates for Service university cadets and for medical and dental cadets. These bring the pay of university cadets broadly into line with that of other junior officers and preserve a differential between the pay of medical and dental cadets and that of university cadets. New London pay rates are also recommended which reflect appropriately the 1979 statistics.

The Government have accepted these recommendations in full and they will be implemented with effect from 1 April 1979. The extra cost of these two measures is £2·26 million; this will be contained within the existing cash limits of the Ministry of Defence.

These measures complete the 1979 pay review for all parts of the Armed Forces. The second supplement to the eighth report of the Armed Forces Pay Review Body is being published as Cmnd. 7770.
