asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many doctors were employed in hospitals in the National Health Service on a date in 1975, and employed in hospitals in the National Health Service on the last date for which figures are available.

The number of doctors employed in hospitals in the NHS in England and Wales (excluding GPs doing hospital work, other clinical assistants and locum staff) was 30,503 at 30 September 1975 and 33,275 at 30 September 1979.
