Christmas Day and Good Friday are common law public holidays: all the other dates listed are bank holidays. In Scotland a public holiday is not always observed on the same day as the bank holiday. A Royal Proclamation was issued on 19 October appointing 1 January and 5 May 1980 bank holidays in England and Wales and 26 December 1979 and 26 May 1980 bank holidays in Scotland. This gave effect to those bank holidays during the next 12 months not laid down in schedule 1 to the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971.
