asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate of the cost of the Clegg awards to each health board in Scotland; what is the amount by which they are offset by increased allocations from central Government; and what the gain to the Exchequer will be as a result of value added tax and income tax revenue on these increases.

The following table gives an estimate of the cost to each area health board and the amount by which the board's allocation has been increased. No estimate can be made of increases in tax revenue. This will depend upon the circumstances and spending decisions of individuals.independent schools and I am not aware of any case in which an education authority does so, though they sponsor some pupils, mainly to independent special schools. Information about grants or sponsorship by other bodies is not available. Both grant-aided and independent schools may also take pupils whose fees are partly or wholly met by boarding school allowances paid to their families by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office or the Ministry of Defence or by bursaries paid by my Department. The amount of such support cannot be related to individual schools.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the private and grant-aided schools in Scotland, the rateable value of the property owned by each of their governing bodies, the rates relief received on that property, and the cash amount of that relief for the most recent available year.

No information is available centrally on the property owned by the governing bodies of independent or grant-aided schools, its rateable value or rates relief received.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the grant-aided schools in Scotland with the number of staff in each school and an estimate for the cost to public funds of grants or other financial assistance to train these teachers at university or colleges of education.

The following table shows the number of teachers, expressed as full-time equivalents, at each grant-aided secondary school in September 1978–the latest year for which figures are available; no information is available centrally about the training costs of these teachers.
