asked the Secretary of Sate for Scotland if he will now state the number of primary and secondary teachers in Scottish schools as outline in the September 1979 census; and what his estimates are for 1980 and 1981.

Information about teacher numbers derived from the September 1979 school census is not yet available. In the White Paper, "The Government's Expenditure Plans 1980–81", Cmnd. 7746, provision is made for 23,700 primary teachers and 27,200 secondary teachers in the session 1980–81.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the number of teachers registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland in each of the past three years.

Statistical information about the registration of teachers is maintained by the General Teaching Council for Scotland, whom the hon. Member may care to approach direct.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate of the numbers who gained a teaching qualification in Scotland in 1978 but who did not seek employment in teaching.
