asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people are currently unemployed; and how many unfilled vacancies exist, in the county of West Yorkshire.

closed shops; and what change he expects in this figure when the Employment Bill becomes law.

Preliminary results of research into the closed shop, commissioned by my Department, show that closed shop arrangements affect at least 5ยท2 million of the 22.2 million employees in Great Britain. I have made no estimate of the effect that our proposals for changes in the law on industrial relations might have on the number of workers affected by such arrangements.
