asked the Minister for the Civil Service how the current number of employees in the Civil Service compares with May 1979, in total and as a perecentage.

At 1 January 1980 there were 707,800 staff in post in the Civil Service. This represents a decrease of 24,500, or 3ยท3 per cent., over the total of 732,300 in post at 1 April 1979. Figures are not available centrally for May 1979.
