asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the latest figure for staff reductions in the Department of the Environment.
Mr. Heseltine
There were 49,200 staff in post in my Department on 1 January this year, 269 less than on 1 December and 2,922 or approximately 5ยท6 per cent. less than the number in post at the general election.
