The cost per child of school age has been calculated by reference to the number of children in the 5-16-year-old compulsory school age group attending schools in the respective district council areas on 13 January 1978 and 12 January 1979. However, the education and library board summer recreation schemes are primarily for children in the 8-14-year-old age group and the district council summer activity schemes for the 8-19-year-old age group. Expenditure by district councils is 100 per cent. grant-aided by the Department of Education for Northern Ireland.
