asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the real value of the death grant at present compared with its value in October 1967 when it was increased to £30.

Based on the movement of the general index of retail prices up to December 1979, the latest month for which figures are available, the real value of the death grant at present, compared with its value in October 1967, is £7·82.
