asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will compare the monthly net income when at work, and during the first six months of sick leave, of civil servants, married with two children, earning £8,000 to £10,000 and £12,000 a year, assuming work expenses of £10 a week, local authority rates of £450 per annum, and that sick leave commenced in week 26 of the tax year.

Net income while at work is monthly earnings and child benefit, less income tax, NIC, local rates, work expenses and widows and orphans contributions.Net income while on sick leave is monthly earnings reduced by amount of sickness benefit and earnings related supplement, sickness benefit, earnings related supplement and child benefit, less income tax, NIC, local rates and widows and orphans contributions.The figures would apply to anyone in the same circumstances having their pay made up in full during sickness, and not solely to civil servants.
