asked the Secretary of State for Defence (1) what is the latest number of personnel employed by his Department in Wales; and how this figure compares with that of 3 May 1979;(2) how many civilian personnel are currently employed in defence establishments in Wales.

At 1 January 1980 there were 9,400 Ministry of Defence civilians —including Royal ordnance factory staff—and 6,750 Service personnel employed at defence establishments in Wales. At 1 May 1979 the number of civilians employed was 9,750. Details of numbers of Service personnel in Wales are compiled only twice yearly and the strength at 1 July, the nearest date to 1 May for which details are available, was 6,300.
