asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list the total amount of income tax paid by persons earning (a) under £5,000 (b) under £10,000, (c) under £15,000 and (d) over £15,000; and if he will show this in percentage terms.

Without the expenditure of undue time and resources the information is only obtainable by ranges of total income. The following estimates relate to 1978–79, which is the latest year for which provisional information is available.

The estimates quoted refer to the accrual of income tax as opposed to the actual receipts of tax.Incomes of a married couple have been added together.
