asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what steps Her Majesty's Government intend to take to diminish the size of the so-called black economy, comprising those who avoid taxation by arranging for services to be paid in cash which is not declared as earnings.

Procedures for the detection of undeclared income are under continuous review.

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proposals he has to employ extra staff to combat tax evasion.

[pursuant to his reply, 20 February 1980]: We have no proposals to increase the staff of the Revenue departments, which will continue to deploy their available staff in the most effective way.
